- Organic forage barley – Specification of product – ASK
Barley (lat. Hordeum) is together with wheat our oldest agriculturally grown plant. It is mostly cultivated in drier areas for peeled barley production (forage), for bread, coffee substitution and also for malt production, which is then used to make our very popular beer.
The history of barley goes back to 5000 years BC and it was perceived as a “sacred gift from God”. In China barley was perceived as a symbol of man’s virility and it was included among 5 sacred plants that could be symbolically sown only by the emperor himself.
The color of grains should be light yellow and there cannot be brown tops.
